| As a historic
winemaking area Toro has made a huge
comeback in the last fifteen years.
Its rich, ripe and powerful red
wines, based on the native Tinta del
Toro (Tempranillo) grape, began to
show their potential after a new
generation of trained enologists
began work here and the necessary
investment was made in stainless
steel equipment. In the last decade
there has also been a continuous
upgrading of harvesting methods.
What makes Toro's red wines unusual
- and has given them fame since
medieval times - is their
combination of top-range strength,
full fruit, freshness and acidity as
well as the ability to age well. |

Liberalia
|
|
The name Liberalia is taken from the wine-filled celebrations held in the
ancient Roman civilization in honor of the the god Liber (also known as
Bacchus). Owner Juan Antonio Fernández and his daughter Beatriz manage their 35
hectares of vineyard with care, hand-harvesting in small 10-kg boxes and using
minimal chemicals. Both classically trained musicians, they produce their wines
with love, with Juan Antonio walking through the vineyard at night playing his
violin to the vines, while Beatriz makes sure there is always classical music
piped into the aging cellar. Their production is 90% old-vine (25 to 100 yrs)
Tinta de Toro, with a small amount of Malvasia, Moscatel, and Albillo grown as
well. Their wines have earned high ratings and excellent reviews, among them
from Robert Parker and in worldwide wine competitions. |
