Region: DO Bierzo

Bierzo, an increasingly fashionable small Denominación de Origen (DO) in northwest Spain, is the gateway to Galicia and ‘green Spain’. In the center of the area is a fertile, rich plain enclosed on both sides by mountains. Vineyards found as high as 2300 feet are found on these slopes, with a mix of clay, chalk, and slate on the elevated vineyards and alluvial soils in the plains. Both in terms of landscape and the wines from this area, this is an area of transition between central Spain and Galicia, with excellent varietal Mencía reds and whites made from the Godello grape. Reds from Bierzo are sometimes compared to Burgundian Pinot Noir due to their subtle complexity, earthiness, and light style.

Bodegas Ribas Del Cúa
In 1988, a successful local businessman, Tomás García, set about putting together a workable vineyard. Ten years later, virtually to the day, having made over a thousand purchases of tiny plots of land, he had put together 40 hectares with which to realize his dream of making the finest wine in the Bierzo. This long hillside, which runs down to the river Cúa, gives its name to the winery: Ribas (slopes) del Cúa . Planting of these vineyards began in 1998 and it is today the largest single vineyard in the Bierzo. Today, Tomas’s children Fran and Susana and his niece Pilar continue his legacy.
