| The cool, green
region of Vinho Verde is located in
the northwest of Portugal, north of
the city of Porto. The native
Loureiro, Arinto, Alvarinho, and
Trajadura white varieties are suited
perfectly to the climate and yield
crisp, aromatic, mineral whites that
make delicious aperitifs and pair
beautifully with a variety of fish
and other dishes. There is an
unfortunate and inaccurate popular
image of Vinho Verde as an
inexpensive, sweet, slightly fizzy
white wine packaged in a tall, slim
green bottle. However, Vinho Verde
can be incredibly diverse and of
very high quality, ranging from dry
and creamy and totally free of fizz,
rounded with a short stay in oak, to
mouth-filling, with crisp minerality,
complexity and very aromatic. |

Antonio Vinagre runs the
quinta started by his
grandmother in 1926.
This family winery
produces high-quality
Vinho Verde from their
two small estates, where
they also have a nursery
with roses and fruit
trees. Their wines are
produced from Loureiro,
the delightfully floral
white that is now the
most widely planted
grape in this region;
and Arinto, the native
white that lends
minerality and lemon to
wines and gains
creaminess and
complexity with age. |
